John says hummingbirds can handle heat with shelter and moisture. Some species, like the Southwest Costa's hummingbird, are heat-adapted. He also says hummingbirds have low feather density around their legs, eyes, and wing bases.

“You can even ‘train’ hummingbirds to anticipate a good mist by using a mister with a timer that turns on the mist daily,” John says.
