Attract More Hummingbirds for Less Money

Red food coloring is unnecessary and may hurt birds. Avoid adding them to sugar water!

Place hummingbird feeders in the shade to reduce algae buildup and reduce the need to replenish homemade nectar.

Avoid pricey hummingbird feeders and stick with simple ones. The basic types attract hummingbirds well.

Red highlights attract hummingbirds, especially early in the season. Real red flowers are best, but ribbons, bows, old scarves, and imitation flowers might pull them in. Attach them to feeder or pole tops.

Hummingbird perches; they need to rest! Male hummingbirds like feeder perches. Hang some stripped-leaf branches from the pole or add coat hangers from adjacent trees. Or DIY a hummingbird swing.

Nest for less: Let dandelions and milkweed seed. Hummingbirds line their nests with fluffy filaments.

Relax: After creating your ideal hummingbird habitat, sit outside and enjoy the sights and sounds. Enjoy your morning coffee, lunch among the trees, or sunset air in your garden. Hummingbirds will finish the show!
