Dear Citizens of Raymond,

Once again my second grade students have been reading and learning about ways we have been hurting our planet Earth and also ways in which we can help solve this problem. This project has been cross curricular as it has incorporated reading, writing, social studies and science.

The students have been synthesizing and applying this learned information. Their writing performance task has been to take some of the information they gathered, inform the citizens of Raymond about the plight of our planet and then try to persuade them to do things that will help our planet and not to do things that will hurt our planet.

This has been very engaging and powerful because the students are writing to an “authentic audience.” They are very excited to share their learning with the town of Raymond and help make a difference by helping their planet!  Thank you for taking the time to read their “letters from the heart.”

Sincerely yours,
Maureen A. Desrosiers
Grade 2 teacher at Lamprey River Elementary

Dear Citizens of Raymond,
I want to persuade you to recycle more! My first reason is so old things can be made into new things. We can do this so we have new things like clothes, rugs, water bottles, benches and steel for new buildings and more! We can solve this problem of trash by recycling. Would you like it if you walked by a bunch of trash? Well, I wouldn’t. I was on my bus with my friend, Jenna and we saw so much trash. We did not like it at all! So the next day we went back with plastic bags and picked the trash up and tomorrow we are going to recycle all of it. Another reason is if you throw trash on the ground, animals could eat it and get really, really sick or it could wash into a storm drain during a rainstorm and a sea turtle might mistake it for a jellyfish if it is a plastic bag. Then the sea turtle will eat it and it will get stuck in its stomach and there will be no more room for food so it will die. Would you like that? My fourth reason is if you litter, this pollution will go into the air. It will make us not able to breathe. Would you like that to happen to us?

Your earth caring friend,
Annaliese Hetherington

Dear Raymond,
I am writing to ask you to stop hurting our planet. My first reason is if you litter you can kill plants and animals. The animals can eat the litter and the soil can get bad and kill the plants. My second reason is the trash can also not make the world good for humans. The air will become polluted! My third reason is if you litter with a plastic bag, the bag can go to the ocean. Then a sea turtle can think it is a jellyfish and eat it and die. So please do not litter.

Your friend,
Brennan Farrell

Dear People of Raymond,
I am writing to you to stop throwing trash on the ground. My first reason is that when you throw trash on the ground, it ends up in the ocean. When it goes to the ocean, a turtle could think trash is food and eat it and die! My second reason is do you want trash everywhere? This world would be a dirty place to live in and the sky will be filled with pollution. My third reason is do you want to live in trash? I don’t because the animals and plants can die because of all that trash. That is why I am telling you about not throwing trash on the ground so we are able to still be alive and our world will be a clean and beautiful place to live in.

Dear Citizens,
You have to stop using oil so much. If you use oil too much it takes a long time to replace. Then we will run out of oil if we use it too much. Oil also makes the sky poisoned by cars and other things that use oil. It might even kill animals in our sky like birds! Sometimes a boat that carries oil can have an accident and create an oil spill. It takes a long time to clean it up and it might make animals blind or kill thousands of sea animals. You should care about oil spills and you should help! Now you know why I need you to use less oil.

Sincerely,
Samuel Doremus

Dear Citizens of Raymond,
I feel that you should use less oil. My first reason is an oil tanker could have a leak and thick oil could cover the water and shore and hurt wildlife. The biggest oil spill in the United States killed 250,000 seabirds! Using less oil prevents oil spills and pollution does not spread. My next reason is that animals could become extinct. Do you really want that? Please use less fossil fuels and less electricity. Do you want pollution to get around our town? Can you try to get some exercise? Have some fun outside instead of playing video games. Join us, Raymond, to help Mother Earth. My last reason is even if there is only one of you, YOU CAN make a big change to help our environment.

Your earth loving friend,
Kyle Leombruno

Dear Adults and Children,
We need to stop hurting the animals and their homes. My first reason is did you know 1,000 species of animals are dying? How unfair it is that people are cutting down trees so birds can’t make nests in those trees. We will lose oxygen. We need plants to live because plants breathe out oxygen. My second reason is that there are oil spills happening and animals are in the water so the sea animals are touching the oil and getting sick or dying. I am sure you are sad for the animals. So please do not throw trash on the ground because then the animals can find it and eat it and get sick and die. Do you want our Earth to stay like this?

Your earth caring friend,
Hayden Babineau

Dear Raymond,
Please stop hurting our planet by throwing trash on the ground. My first reason is that trash can take a long time to break down. Plastic bags can take up to twenty years to break down and plastic bottles can take 450 years to break down. Trash can get into the water and then sea animals can die. You could recycle trash instead and make it into new things. You could make it into playground equipment like a slide or a bench. So now you know why I want you to stop hurting our planet by throwing trash on the ground.

Sincerely,
Jacob St. John

Dear Raymond,
I want to persuade people to recycle more. When people throw trash out the window, animals may eat it and die. When you throw plastic bags out the window, the rain washes it down the drain and to the ocean. It looks like a jellyfish and the animals eat it and die. When you throw away plastic bottles it takes 500 years for it to dissolve.  If it goes into a dump, it will stink. The landfills are also getting full from too much trash. Then we need to make more landfills and that is taking land away and the animals’ homes.  When we need more landfills we are taking away a lot of space on the Earth. That is why we should recycle more.

Sincerely,
Colby Knight

Dear Raymond,
I want to persuade you to clean up the Earth! My first reason is you need to clean up the Earth is because you can hurt the animals by using too much oil. Stop using so much oil because it can get into the animals’ stomachs. Oil spills happen a lot of times and they kill animals too. I also want you to stop littering to save our animals. If you litter, the animal will die. For example, a plastic bag can get into a turtle’s stomach. Listen to me, you are your own person and you can make a difference! My last reason is most of the animals will die if we keep hurting them. So, are you with me, Raymond? How would you like it if all your beloved animals died…no birds, dogs, fish and turtles! Help me help the Earth, Raymond! Help save the animals!

Your animal loving friend,
Abigail Coffey

Dear Raymond,
I feel that people should recycle more. My first reason is when you throw trash out, the animals eat it and might die. When you drop plastic bags on the ground then a storm comes and washes the bag away in a storm drain and then to the ocean. Then turtles may eat it and get sick or die. My second reason is when you recycle plastic,it can be made into new things like benches, blankets, jackets, tubs, carpets, rugs and new bottles. My third reason is when you litter, the places that you love might disappear from all of the trash like the beaches, the oceans, the mountains and lakes. So please recycle more.

Your earth loving friend,
Jenna Shannon

Dear Raymond,
I want to persuade you to recycle more plastic. When you throw a bag on the ground, the wind can blow the plastic bag into the ocean. If you throw it in the trash, it goes into a landfill but now there is no more space. The landfills are getting full because there is too much stuff going in the trash. One person throws away about 1,000 pounds of trash a year. Imagine adding even more people each throwing away 1,000 pounds of trash! Think… that’s a lot, right? The landfills are getting full. There is so much stuff going in the trash. If you recycle it, then it would go to a factory and be turned into new plastic bottles, tubs, carpets, blankets, jackets, and more. So now you know why I am asking you to recycle. So…go recycle!

Yours truly,
Desiree Duffaut

Dear Raymond,
Do you know that you are hurting Mother Earth? If we keep on using too much oil, animals will get hurt. There can be an oil spill and the oil doesn’t mix with the water and sea animals that need air can get hurt like dolphins and whales. If we keep on using too much oil it can get on the shore too and it can make birds very sick.  What would happen if there were no animals or oxygen on this planet? We also need to recycle more because a plastic bottle can take up to 450 years to decompose. If we recycle, those things you recycle can get turned into new things like a slide or a backpack. What would you do if our world was full of trash?

Sincerely,
Isiah Hansen

Dear People of Raymond,
You need to stop throwing trash on the ground! My first reason is animals are dying because of people throwing things on the ground. Trash gets into the water and then turtles get sick from the bags. Another reason is when you throw plastic bottles on the ground,  it takes 500 years to disintegrate. The bottles can be put into a recycling bin and be turned into new things like benches and new bags. Another reason is when people spit gum out the window animals could have a chance to eat it and choke.  My third reason is if you have old clothes or shoes, don’t just get rid of them. You could put them in a yellow Clothes and Shoes bin in our town. Then other people will be able to have clothes. Now you know what to do to keep our world clean.

Yours truly,
Eva Porter

Dear Raymond,
I am writing to you because I want people to recycle more. My first reason is animals are eating trash. In storms, the trash goes down the drains and goes to the ocean. If the bag was in the ocean, a turtle can eat it and they could get sick and die. My second reason is you can make new stuff like benches, coats, blankets and rugs. My third reason is tin cans take 100 years to break down and plastic containers take 500 years to break down! So now you see why we should recycle more.

Sincerely,
Annette Darling

Dear Raymond,
I think we should really clean our town of Raymond. My first reason is because Ian Kiernan is someone who really cared for our Earth because he saw trash floating in the harbor and made a plan to go back to Sydney and to clean the harbor. Please clean Raymond like him. My second reason is please save our animals by not polluting our lakes, rivers and ponds and land such as our town. I love sea animals and land animals so please save them! My third reason is if our land is polluted people could also die from pollution in the air. Please, oh please, clean our beautiful town! I know you can!

Sincerely yours,
Lucas Blackstone

Dear Raymond,
I am writing to you because I feel that we need to use less oil. My first reason is because people are using oil faster than it’s made because it is a fossil fuel. My second reason is we can use less oil by using less gas. Instead of using a car or a motorcycle, we can use a bicycle. My third reason is oil can also leak from an oil tanker and kill sea animals. Oil can get all over sea animals and when an animal gets oil on its feathers, it can get sick and die. So now you know why you should use less oil.

Your Earth loving friend,
Matthew Wiegard
