2nd Grade "Letters From The Heart"

May 15, 2021

Dear Citizens of Raymond,

My second grade students have been reading and learning about ways we have been hurting our planet Earth and also ways in which we can help solve this problem. This project has been cross curricular as it has incorporated reading, writing, social studies and science. The students have been synthesizing and applying this learned information.

Their writing performance task has been to take some of the information they gathered, inform the citizens of Raymond about the plight of our planet and then try to persuade them to do things that will help our planet and not to do things that will hurt our planet.

This has been very engaging and powerful because the students are writing to an “authentic audience.” They are very excited to share their learning with the town of Raymond and help make a difference by helping their planet!

Thank you for taking the time to read their “letters from the heart.”

Dear Citizens of Raymond,

Do you know why it is bad to throw plastic into a trash can? Well, read this to learn why. My first reason is if you throw plastic into a trash can it will go to a landfill and take years to decompose! For example, a plastic bag can take up to 20 years to break down and a plastic bottle up to 500 years to decompose! My second reason is when the plastic bag goes to a landfill, it can be blown into the ocean and a turtle might eat it. For example, the turtle might eat the plastic bag because it might think it is a jellyfish and then get sick and die! My third reason is if you recycle it instead, it goes to a factory and gets made into new things. For example, it can be made into carpets, playground equipment, coats and backpacks. So now you see why I really want you to recycle plastic things.

Dear Raymond Citizens,

I have a question for you. Would you like to lose our clean water and get dirty water? Well, I wouldn’t! Now please listen to me because this is true. I don’t want our land and oceans to get dirty. But if we don’t recycle, it will. I have a story, Raymond, that might soon happen to us. One day in Flint, Michigan, all their water got poisoned by something called lead. They could not take baths, cook with it, use it to brush their teeth or even drink it! If you did drink it, you could get headaches, stomach aches and terrible rashes. The colored water they had was a clearish yellow, orange and red and it smelled really bad! Would you want that? I wouldn’t! This happened from people polluting their water. So, I am asking you, Raymond, to start recycling! You can make backpacks, rugs, carpets, benches, and playground structures from things we recycle! Even coats! Also, if we don't recycle and we pollute our waters, we aren’t just hurting the water but we are hurting animals and us! So, come with me, Raymond to make our world a better place!

Alivia Scarfo

Dear Raymond Citizens,

We need to recycle more to save our planet! My first reason is landfills are getting too full and trash is getting into the ocean! For example, if you go to a landfill you’ll see all the trash that is getting piled up. That is bad for the planet! My second reason is if the plastic bag gets into the ocean, sea animals could eat it or get stuck in it! For example, say you were at the beach and brought a snack in a plastic bag and when you were done, you threw it on the beach. A wave could take it in, a turtle could think it is a jellyfish and eat it! My third reason is a lot of plastic doesn’t get recycled. For example, you use a plastic bottle and throw it into the trash instead of recycling it when it could be made into something new, like a bench, toys, swings, playground structures and much more!  I hope now you can see why we need to recycle more.

Your Earth loving friend,

Penelope Robie

Dear Citizens of Raymond,

Hello, my name is Ryder. You need to be careful with oil and use less oil forever. My first reason is did you know that once 250,000 otters died because of an oil spill? When you go on a boat, you might see an oil spill. An oil spill can happen because the tanker has an accident. One of the largest oil spills ever was in 1989. It spilled over 11 million gallons of oil. When animals get covered with oil, they can have many problems. My second reason is that people in the United States use too many gallons of oil every day. Now you know that when you use too much oil, you are hurting our planet.

Sincerely,

Ryder Brackett

Dear Citizens of Raymond,

Would you want to swim in garbage? Well, I sure wouldn’t. Read this to keep it from happening. My first reason is if you litter and don’t pick it up, the wind might blow it into a river which goes into the ocean. If the trash goes into the ocean, sea animals might think it’s food and eat it and then get sick and die. My second reason is if you put something in the trash, once it gets to a landfill it might not be covered. So then the wind blows it out of the landfill and into the ocean. An animal might think it’s a fish or a jellyfish and eat it and die. My last reason is if you keep the oceans, rivers and lakes clean, then you help keep the oceans beautiful. Trash will make our water less pretty but without trash, they are beautiful! So now you can see why you want to keep the oceans, rivers and lakes clean.

Dear People,

Stop throwing trash out the window! I have seen trash bags on the ground when I was driving with my dad. The trash will go to the lake and every lake leads to the ocean. The sea animals may eat it and they could die. Also, would you want to be stepping on trash at the beach? I would not because if something gets in your feet it can hurt, like glass. Glass can also hurt fish inside. If trash gets into the water, it takes a long time to disintegrate, so if a fish eats it, it is not going to go well. There’s no medication for them and they’re not in a fish tank. When a fish eats glass, it hurts their insides.  Would you want the ocean to be polluted? So, when you throw out trash, think twice before you do.

Sincerely you Earth loving friend,

Joseph Avola

Dear Raymond,

I am writing this to tell you that you should recycle. My first reason is if you recycle, it can be turned into compost. Compost comes from food scraps. Compost also helps new plants grow. My second reason is if you recycle plastic, it can be made into something new like playground equipment and benches. My third reason you should recycle is because plastic bags are killing sea turtles! So, are you going to recycle?

Dear Citizens of Raymond,

People are hurting the planet and I need your help to stop that. People are littering and littering is killing animals and trees. Animals also could eat the litter and then they get sick. That’s why I need your help. Even if you throw away trash, the wind could blow it out of the trash can and it can get into the ocean. Please recycle. Animals’ lives depend on you. If the litter gets into the ocean, sea animals could die. We need trees for oxygen and birds need trees so they can build their homes. Litter can pollute the air too. Now you know why I need your help.

Dear CItizens of Raymond,

Do you know what the Earth looks like in some places? I’ll tell you. It looks like a trash can. Also, do you know what some people are doing to the Earth? Some people are throwing trash on the ground. My first reason why people might throw trash on the ground is because people think the Earth is so big that it can handle it, but actually it is pretty small and it can’t handle it. For example, if everyone drops one plastic bag on the ground, then there will be millions of  trash on the ground. Do you want to be living in trash? I wouldn’t. My second reason is we need to recycle more.  If you recycle more, it can be made into new things. For example, plastic can be made into playground structures such as a slide and benches. It also can be made into toys. So now you can see why Earth does look dirty in some places and why we need to STOP littering and recycle.

Dear Citizens of Raymond,

Can you help save our favorite animals? Then let’s pick up trash so our animals can live in a beautiful world. We can all pick up trash for the animals. The animals might eat trash on accident and get sick and die. Animals could get glass stuck in their feet. I help pick up trash. Go ask anyone to help you. You can do it. Pick up every single piece of trash you see, like trash that might fling out of a trash can. Always pick up trash but do NOT pick up big rocks or seashells at the beach. That is actually some animal’s home. Did you know that? You are probably saying that we can take one. No, you are leaving animals homeless.

Dear Raymond,

I want to see more people recycling. My first reason you should recycle every day is because it is good for the Earth. If nobody recycles, then there will be more trash on the ground. My second reason is if recycling isn’t a thing, then you’ll be walking near trash. Would you like that? NO! So I just want people to stop throwing trash on the ground. My third reason I want people to stop is sometimes animals eat the trash. Sometimes I have seen animals killed because of us. So now you see why we should recycle everyday.

Your Earth hero,

Zoey Johnston

Dear Raymond,

People are littering so I need your help. It’s a problem. My first reason why I feel it’s a big problem is because trash blows away into the ocean from people. People throw trash on the ground and it blows into the ocean. Animals eat it and get sick. We should also recycle WAY more than you think. Our landfills are WAY too big because trash is taken to the landfills and trash in the landfills might blow away or birds might eat it. Now you see why you have to stop littering and start to recycle more.

Your earthy friend,

Bradley Woods

Dear Raymond,

Do you know what is floating in the water? Well, I will tell you! Garbage is in the water! When garbage gets in the water, animals get sick if they eat it. Garbage can be blown in the water. Plastic bottles take 500 years to decompose! Pretend that you were at the beach and you were eating and plastic went in the water, and a turtle ate it and then he got sick! There is one thing that may change your life. RECYCLING! For example, pretend that you are at some place and you find trash and you recycle it. Good choice, you did it!

Hello Raymond,

I am writing to you to tell you that our Earth is dying because we’re throwing trash on the ground! I don’t want to see trash every time I go to school. It’s easy peasy. If you find trash on the ground, find a recycling bin and throw it away. You can’t go like, “Look I found one piece of trash and I put it in the recycling bin.” It’s more complicated. I have lost an animal before and it’s sad. Sea animals can die from our trash. So can you. So please stop hurting Earth. It’s our mother. Please stop and listen. One person can make a big difference. This is where we live, where we eat, where we drink. I don’t want to lose this because this is our home. So...can you help us all? We all live here in this beautiful place and it is going to become a dump if we don’t help. SO please recycle, not just for me but for all of us.

Your Earth caring friend,

Jackson Gartley

Dear Citizens,

I don’t like it when people throw trash. When I was on the bus, I saw so much trash. I saw plastic bottles, soda cans and glass cracked bottles on the ground. I do not like to see trash on the ground. If I see trash on the ground, I pick it up so please pick up your trash. Be nice to our planet and to Mother Nature. We love the Earth but trash on the ground is a problem.

Sincerely you friend,

Alleyah Howe

Dear Raymond,

If you are at the beach, do not throw trash on the ground. If animals swallow the trash they could die because they will have no room for food. The plastic bag will look like a jellyfish and the sea animal will eat it and get sick. Also, wind can even blow trash from landfills into the ocean.

Your Earth loving friend,

Autumn Haskins
