LRES & IHGMS Math Night and Book Swap Was A Blast
By Cheryl Killam 2-7-14
As you walked through the doors beside the gymnasium of the Iber Holmes Gove Middle School on Thursday evening, Jan. 30, parents and their children were lined up checking out the book swap tables to either drop off a book for someone else to enjoy or taking a book for themselves to take home and read.
Ms. V. handed out at least 40 pairs of hand made mittens in a wide variety of colors, donated by Peoples Bank, available to anyone who wanted a pair.
There were approximately 18 stations set up around the middle school gymnasium, with games and activities at the tables and other activities on the floor.
About 120 students attended with their parents and some without. Everyone moved from table to table to try their hand at age appropriate math challenges.
LRES Principal Dan Legallo was testing Brady Potter, 9, who was accompanied by Cori Fazio, his Mom , on what 12 times 7 equalled. Stumped by how to solve that the principal asked Brady if he knew what 10 times 7 was and he responded with 70. Then the principal asked if Brady knew what 2 times 7 was and Brady answered 14.
Next the principal asked again, what is 12 times 7 and when Brady hesitated he suggested that Brady add his two answers together. Brady was able to give the correct answer of 84 with a proud smile on his face, happy to have figured it out.
Aileen and Brigid Auclair sit with Principal Dan Legallo while he taught them the card game Biz Bus.
Ms. Linda Croteau and Ms. Andrea Elliott had numbers 1 through 20 spread out on the floor with the children moving around, laughing and having a lot of fun while Math in Music was provided by the band instructor Ms. Zoe Jost.
Lunch lady Jody Gibbons was handing out free cups of popcorn to anyone who wanted a light snack.
