Vibrant colors, festive lights and elaborate decorations welcome guests to Gordo’s Burritos and Tacos on 64 Freetown Road in Raymond. The comfortable and fun atmosphere as well as the variety of Mexican food provide a dining-out experience for families and friends.

The menu features various items including burritos, quesadillas, tacos, salads and burgers. In addition, the restaurant recently received its liquor license, allowing it to serve homemade margaritas, piña coladas and other drinks.

Mike and Judy Simms, the owners of Gordo’s, brought their knowledge of the catering business with them when they moved from California to New Hampshire about five years ago. They had hopes of continuing the Italian restaurant known as The Loft that had occupied the space prior to Gordo’s. However, they began experiencing difficulties due to the recession in the economy and began to brainstorm ideas to reinvent the restaurant space.

The couple decided to take a risk and do something different - a California-style Mexican restaurant. In order to succeed in the restaurant business, they knew they needed to make some significant changes.

“We wanted a limited menu and limited staff,” said Mike Simms. “It’s a smaller, simpler menu.”

Three and a half years later, their risk seems to have paid off. Gordo’s offers fresh-made Mexican cuisine all day and now offers breakfast on the weekends, including complimentary homemade muffins.

The restaurant offers a kids menu for $4.95 and the staff hides a stuffed monkey named Peeko every day for children to find. In addition, Gordo’s will give away a free burrito to anyone who brings in an unopened hot sauce they do not currently have.

On Wednesdays, Gordo’s will be offering Lobster Roll Tacos made with fresh lobster purchased from the Lobster Wrangler at the Raymond Farmers Market on Tuesdays. It will also give a $1 discount on a Corona.

Other coupons for Gordo’s can be found on Raymond Coalition for Youth Discount cards, which offer a “Buy one burrito and get half off the second burrito” deal, as well as Gordo’s Burritos and Tacos Loyalty Punch Card, which offers a “Buy seven burritos and get one free” deal.

In a glimpse at the menu items, the Chicken Quesadilla comes with fresh-made tortilla chips, rice, sour cream, salsa – not too spicy - and guacamole. The quesadilla is filled with grilled chicken and an abundance of melted cheese, and is grilled to crisp it up.

The Salad Bowl with grilled shrimp contains tortilla strips, black beans, cilantro and fresh chopped lettuce, tomatoes and onions and the traditional slice of fresh lime.

The Taco plate is served with two crispy or soft corn tortillas with lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, cilantro, fresh lime and your choice of filling.

The Huevos Rancheros is soft warm tortillas with refried beans, eggs over easy, and rancheros sauce, topped with cheese and sides of guacamole and sour cream.

The Nacho plate is home-made tortilla chips topped with your choice of filling, smothered with melted cheese, beans, queso salsa, sour cream, pico de gallo and jalapeño peppers.

Gordo's BBQ Sandwich is packed with your choice of BBQ chicken or pork, layered with refried beans, guacamole, lettuce, pico de gallo and cheese on a toasted kaiser roll served with salsa and chips.

There is a variety of fillings to choose from including marinated steak, marinated chicken, grilled shrimp, seasoned ground beef, vegetarian (grilled Portabello mushrooms, bell pepper and onions), Chorizo (spicy Mexican sausage), Carnitas (slow roasted shredded pork), BBQ Chicken and BBQ Pork.

All of the meats served except for the slow roasted pork, are seasoned with Gordo’s own “Love Mix.”

Offering a casual dining experience, Gordo’s allows guests to order at the counter, seat themselves and grab their own plastic-ware. The meals are then served in plastic baskets with paper trays that hold the different components of the meal. Leftovers can be taken home in a to-go box.

Gordo's is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m, Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m and Sunday from 8 am. to 8 pm.

Call ahead orders To-Go are welcome at 244-3410.
