The (W)hole Point Institute Takes Radical Step To Support Veterans
Submitted by John Chadwick  7-22-14

The Institute hosted a workshop on Tuesday July 8 through Thursday July 10 featuring Reverend Chris Antal of "Soldiers Heart". This workshop has never been offered in the state of New Hampshire.

The workshop was a gathering for Veterans, Faith Leaders, and Community Members to focus on the moral injury that our Veterans experience and often is diagnosed as PSTD. The director of the (W)hole Point Institute in Raymond, Rev. Alaya Chadwick, LICSW, has committed the Institute to ongoing innovative efforts to support our Veterans and their families.

Soldier's Heart, developed by Edward Tick, Ph.D. and Kate Dahlstedt, LMHC, provides a unique and comprehensive model to address the emotional, moral, and spiritual wounds of veterans, their families and communities. It offers a genuine healing and homecoming from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by developing a new and honorable warrior identity supported by community.

The topics focused on included: War, Soul, Spirituality, PTSD, moral injury, our individual relationship to the military, and how our religious beliefs influence us.

Each of person was invited to ponder the question:  “What do I believe about war, the military, the war-activities of killing, our participation as a member of society, and our responsibility for the acts of war taken on our behalf.

It was a bold and brave action for the attendees to gather and to transparently share on these topics.

They were invited to come to the workshop with the intent to explore how to collaborate and co-create community responses to the “War-Torn” of us all. Additionally, the “POD” approach  (Veteran + Faith Leaders + Community Members) was unique, and, the first time offered.

This POD approach invites all of us to open our minds, our hearts, our souls, transparently, in community.  There was no “Right or Wrong” to each person’s viewpoint and faith orientation.  Everyone celebrated for joining us for this 2 ½ day journey.  Participants came from Maine, Rhode Island, Mass, and New Hampshire.
